Awon & Linkrust – Moon Beams

Moon Beams is a project by rapper Awon and producer Linkrust that takes the listener on a spaced out afrofuturistic journey through the streets as they exist today, yesterday, and possibly the future. The music by Linkrust is obscure, raw, and gritty yet beautiful at times composed as it is an alien operating on a different frquency. The accompanying lyrics of Awon only enhance the vibration making this musical offering one that should be listened to as a mix or in one sitting to gain the full experience of this genre bending journey into another time, place, and possibly galaxy.

Mz Boom Bap – The Rawness EP

““The Rawness” is the debut EP from Portuguese beat maker Mz Boom Bap. A genuine homage to the golden era, everything from the drum programming to the sample selection to the subtle ringing distortion of the Akai s950 delivers a seldom seen old-school authenticity. Where similar style efforts often fall short by overpaying for uninspired bars from aging New York veterans, Mz has instead recruited an underground freshman team of budding young rhyme spitters. Only 30 seconds into track 2 you can hear the youthful vigor in 17-year-old Curtis Roach’s delivery that will have listeners checking the album notes seeking an identification. Features include Don’t Sleep Records co-founders Awon & Phoniks (bars and DJ cuts, respectively), Curtis Roach, Nemesyzz Rigby, Philo, Ryler Smith and MC Shinobi. Neck braces sold separately.”

Kap G – SupaJefe

I’ve been a strong admirer of Atlanta’s Kap G. His newest album SupaJefe marks his transition toward becoming a BOSS. Having released a series of mixtapes over the course of five years, Kap G’s hard work in perfecting his flows, words, and overall composition is noticeable on SupaJefe.
Currently signed to Pharrell’s I Am Other Records, Kap G surpasses my expectation through his fearless storytelling approach. He doesn’t hold anything back. SupaJefe is a brilliantly true composition of clever wordplay – something that I believe is the mark of a genius poet and genuine storyteller. He most definitely brings a whole new perspective to the Atlanta music scene.

Boogie Belgique – Volta

“Nostalgic, soulful and, of course, boogie-woogie.” That’s how Belgian DJ producer Boogie Belgique (AKA Oswald Cromheecke) describes the enticing combination of styles and sources from different decades that make up his music. Taking vintage inspirations, most notably from swing and jazz eras, and merging them with contemporary beats and textures is the young producer’s forte. This is pleasingly evident on Volta, the latest Boogie Belgique album for Cold Buster Label.”
