Throwback: Incredible Bongo Band – Bongo Rock

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY Incredible Bongo Band’s Bongo Rock birthed Hip Hop, just ask DJ Kool Herc who was inspired by the Apache breakbeat and used it at his parties in the late 70s. This album has been sampled hundreds, if not thousands of times by countless modern day musicians. Just one example, In a Gadda Da Vida was notoriously sampled on “Hip Hop Is Dead” by Nas.

Menahan Street Band – Make The Road By Walking

Brooklyn based Menahan Street Band is straight funk/soul music and was formed by Thomas Brenneck in 2008, the same year this album was released. The group is comprised of musicians from Antibalas, El Michels Affair, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, and The Budos Band.

Their first single “Make The Road By Walking” was sampled by Jay-Z on “Roc Boys (And the Winner is…)” off The American Gangster album. Other hip hop artist went ahead and sampled a few of their songs.
